Currently, there is an important progression in our healthcare paradigm from a purely symptom-condition based view to health towards a paradigm that is more reflective of the day to day reality of being a human being. Illness is not simply an isolated affliction that is separate from our daily lives. Illness is a system of communication and bio-feedback: when we are in states of stress (which are individual in themselves), when we are at odds with our lives, when we are neglecting our bodies, when we suppress difficult emotions- we become ill. In our modern times there is so much distraction and causes of stress that it has become alarmingly easy to develop chronic disease. Do we really believe that our illness is separate from our lives, nothing to do with our mental patterns, emotional distress and environment? I do not believe that and in my practice of medicine I have witnessed and experienced that when the problems the person is faced with are acknowledged and healed, true health is the result.
The human body is an extremely intelligent organism. It is the intelligence within the body that manages your breathing, heart rate, digestive functions, hormonal functions, reproduction and so on. When an individual is at ease and in harmony with themselves and their environment these processes occur effortlessly and the person is unaware of their body- which is as it should be. If we were consciously in charge of managing our own bodies, very few of us would be present to tell the tale! When we become stressed a cascade of chemical changes occur in the body, we secrete the “stress” hormones adrenalin and cortisol and the road to illness begins. If it is not dealt with appropriately at the root of the problem, then all we are doing is moving symptoms around and suppressing the biofeedback mechanism- which is why all pharmaceuticals cause side-effects, which are often worse and more serious (depending on the medication) than the original problem.
Holistic healthcare strives to deal with all the aspects involved in the onset of illness and as such requires time and attention to identify and understand the root of the condition. In many ways my approach to the individual is like a tapestry that weaves together nutrition, care, presence, listening, insight and appropriate natural medicines that help empower the individual to overcome the problem.
Homoeopathy is a system of medicine which, like acupuncture and Chinese medicine, belongs to a holistic paradigm and approach to health. It is based on the principle that “like cures like” and utilises medicines that are manufactured according to homoeopathic principles from the Nature kingdom. Homoeopathic remedies stimulate the innate intelligence of the body to alert it to the internal problems at hand, to stimulate this intelligence and to catalyze homeostasis (internal balance and biological harmony).
